Introduction to Theatre

Course Description
In this course, students will be exposed to a wide variety of theatre and performance techniques. We will be learning how to create stories and pieces of theatre for a variety of audiences. We will be learning to incorporate technical theatre, multimedia and, research into the creation of a play. We will be discussing how to direct a performance, as well as how to communicate ideas and concepts to various audiences. We will be exploring original plays, story theater, short scripted scenes, Shakespeare, and live action performances. There will be a fair amount of research and analysis of scripted and live action plays.

Participation Expectations

  • Student Work: Students will be expected to complete assignments in class during the time given. Because this class is a performance art class, every student must participate in every activity with effort.
  • Group Activities:  You will be working in groups on a regular basis. Your group will be given cooperative learning activities to complete.  You will be expected to be an active member of your group and participation will be assessed accordingly.  You will always be graded as an individual.
  • Extra Credit: Opportunities for extra credit will be offered from time to time.  
  • Homework: homework is only given if a student is unable to complete the task in time allotted and need some extra time to work on it at home. It is also given when a student has missed class and needs to make up work to maintain their grade.
  • Absences: If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get all late work from the teacher and return it in a timely manner.
Behavior Expectations
  • Be in class on time every day.
  • Treat everyone in the class, teacher included, with kindness and respect. You don't have to like everyone, but everyone needs respect.
  • Begin Bell challenge as soon as you enter the classroom.
  • Use professional language at all times. Unless otherwise encouraged by The Script. Profanity is not allowed.
  • Pay attention. You're going to get very lost if you're not paying attention. This class moves fast.
Instructor Expectations

  • Treat every student with respect.
  • Give adequate time for students to complete tasks.
  • Whenever possible, give students benefit of the doubt.
  • Explain expectations in clear and understandable fashion. Allow students to ask for clarification.
  • Help students out when it is clear they don't understand what is asked of them, or how to achieve the goals set out by the assignment. Help students when they ask for it if it is appropriate for the assignment.
